Old Tawny
In the 1800s Goolwa was the most important river port in South Australia linked by rail to Port Elliot, where sailing ships unloaded ballast stone to refill their holds with wool and grain for their return trip to England. Buildings on Ballast Stone Estate Vineyards are made from this stone.
Our Tawny is made predominantly from old vine Shiraz & Grenache. These two ‘workhorse’ varieties have been the backbone of Australian fortified wines for well over 100 years.
We age our Tawny in used American whiskey barrels which allow the wine to slowly evaporate, exposing it to a small amount of air, which results in a Tawny with aged rancio characters.
The oak is subtle, encouraging the roasted nut and dark chocolate flavours—with a hint of golden toffee to dominate the bouquet.
With a minimum age of 20 years, it has a smooth, well rounded palate, finishing with a comforting warm aftertaste.
